An Evolution Of Contact Lenses: From Glass To A Comfortable, Wearable Lens

Believe it or not, contact lenses didn't seem very much different than their glasses counterpart, that is, they were actually made of glass! While Leonardo Da Vinci is sometimes credited with dreaming up the ideas of using contacts, the first wearable contact wasn't made until hundreds of years later by a German eye doctor (named Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick, if you care). These glass monstrosities actually worked, but were made by real glass and could only be worn for, at most, a few hours. The evolution of contact lenses has progressed far since then.

The invention of Plexiglas provided inventors with a slightly better material for plastering on people's eyes. In the 1950's, contacts made of this material began to show up on the market. The problem was they were so costly and fragile that entire insurance companies were developed just to protect people who invested in these devices. Naturally, you can't find these same insurance policies today, although I can't imagine that you would want to.

This better material for contact lenses didn't come without its own problems, however. They didn't let oxygen and air pass through the lenses and onto the eye. If you ever had dry, worn-out eyes from wearing contacts, then you can imagine how it would feel if NO air was getting to them at all. Since then, they have found ways and technologies to allow some gas to get through these "hard" lenses.

The contacts that are more popular today are the ones called "soft" lenses. These contacts are not made of a material as rigid as the "hard" lenses, and held many advantages over them. These soft lenses were lighter and more comfortable. Hard lenses took some time for the wearer to get used to, but the softer lenses would often be comfortable on the very first ear. Best of all, they were better for getting more air to get to the user's eyes. These contacts came about in the sixties, and over time they began to be prescribed to patients more often than their "hard" counterparts.

Light, cheap lenses naturally led to the idea of light, cheap lenses you simply throw away rather than go through the effort of all that maintenance. Contacts become even more comfortable when they became replaced after a few weeks of wear, and some of the more extensive treatments of contact maintenance become no longer necessary (like trying to get rid of pesky protein-buildup).

The latest and greatest in contacts have been around for a while now, contacts made of silicone. These contacts, by comparison, allowed a lot of air to move freely around the eyes. Many of these contacts were advertised as pairs you could leave in your eyes overnight, and more recently they have been advertised as daily-disposables. Some research has shown that these can cause fewer complications than other types with extended wear.

The technology behind maintaining contact solution has changed as well. It used to be that contacts had to be cleaned with multiple solutions and given a regular soak to remove protein build-up. The latest solutions come in one bottle; you simply rinse off the contact and soak it in the same type of solution. There are also a plethora of eye-wetting solutions out there that can help improve your comfort while wearing contacts.

Now is as good a time as ever, if you are considering contacts (especially if you are willing to pay for the good stuff). Contact lenses are safer and more comfortable than ever. That doesn't mean you can ignore good advice. When you get tested, make sure you do whatever is recommended for the proper care and wear of whatever contacts you're provided.

The Latest Trend In Eye Wear Is Cartier Wood Frame Glasses

For jewelry collectors and lovers of fine goods throughout the world, Cartier is a favorite brand. The idea of owning a Cartier watch is often the goal of those who are making their way up the professional ladder as a proof of their success. But for most of us, owning a piece of Cartier has remained a dream - that is until now. An affordable way to own a great item from this company is with Cartier wood frame glasses.

Cartier started in Paris, France in the mid 1800's. It began as a small jewelry shop, that bore the name of its owner, Louis-Francois Cartier. Louis was a great jeweler. But it was his son, who later took over the company that made the Cartier brand a household name. The next generation built the firm by partnering with other exceptional jewelry and watch designers of the time. By the 1960's the family sold the company, but the name and the reputation survives today.

Eye Wear is the New Trend in Fashion Accessories

We typically think of fashion accessories as a great pair of shoes, a cool bag, or a great piece of bling. But that idea is changing fast as trendsetters will not walk out of the door unless they sport a cool pair of glasses. You eyes are the first thing people notice when they look at you, and your eyeglasses tell the world that you are someone to notice.

There are a variety of shapes and styles to choose from. Look for real wood rims to make a strong fashion statement. Great glasses are available for both men and women, so you can find the right size to complement your appearance.

You may be overwhelmed when you walk into the store. There are and endless selection of glasses to choose. So why pick just one? There is not shame in buying a pair for every day of the week or for every look in your closet. Mix it up and get some in gold or silver wire, pink or orange plastic, or even a pair of preppy tortoise shell.

Sunglasses for Style and Safety

Clear lens frames are terrific when you are at your desk or in class, but walk outside and you will want to protect your eyes. Sunglasses are not only chic, they are essential for the health and well being of your eyes. The ultraviolet rays of the sun can cause long term damage that can eventually lead to a variety of eye diseases including blindness. A good lens can protect your eye from sun damage.

One mistake that people make is that they only wear sunglasses in the summer. Sun glasses are not a beach accessory. Although they are called sunglasses, the sky shines bright all year long. Even when the clouds fill the sky, the sun can produce a striking glare that can also damage your vision. Sunglasses can cut the glare and soothe your weary eyes.

So remember, whether you are after the newest look to hit the runway, or you want to look like a star on Hollywood boulevard, put Cartier wood frame glasses on the top of your shopping list. Clear frame glasses give the impression that you are serious and that you have something important to contribute to your company. But when it comes to fashion trends, they also make you look like you are a trendsetter. So show off your best look everyday by completing your ensemble with a different set of frames for every outfit.

The Eyewear Centre near London is offering designer glasses such as Cartier glasses, plus many more top brand designers including Lindberg sunglasses and Chopard.
