Fashion conscious teenagers are risking their eyesight by trying to copy a fashion fad made famous by popstar Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga's wide-eyed look from her Bad Romance video is a trend that is growing in popularity.
Even though the video was release sometime ago, the trend of circle contact lenses is ever increasing, leading to strict health warnings from eyecare professionals.
He said: "The ironic thing is that the circle eyed look in the Lady Gaga video was most probably created digitally rather than with the use of circle contact lenses but unfortunately many of her fans are desperate to re-create the look which could lead to disastrous consequences.
"There is a big risk to the health of people, especially teenagers, who are buying these circle contact lenses without any supervision from an optician or eyecare professional."
Circle lenses are currently very popular in Asian countries such as in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea where they are imported from in various colours such as violet and pink. They make the eyes appear larger and "doll-like" because they cover the iris as normal contact lenses do, and also the whites of the eyes.
Mr Matt added that these types of contact lenses were not regulated by opticians or eyecare professionals as they could be bought over-the-counter without prescription. He said many of those trying to copy the look could be buying them from abroad.
He said: "It is very important that those who are inclined to buy these circle contact lenses do do under the supervision of an optician or eyecare professional.
"In my opinion you are putting your eyesight at risk by wearing these lenses from abroad and as such it is best to stay away from it."
